Creating the Future (formerly the Community-Driven Institute)
What if everything we assume about creating social change is wrong? And what if THAT’s the reason social change happens SO FRUSTRATINGLY SLOWLY?
We are taught that social change takes time. In reality, social change can happen rapidly!
We are taught that social change happens with incremental baby steps. In reality, social change can happen in dramatic leaps forward.
We are taught that change is painful, difficult. In reality, change can be graceful, even joyful.
After 10 years of research, exploration and experimentation with what creates dramatic social change, our mission is now to change how the Community Benefit Sector does its work, so ALL that work can create dramatic, rapid, graceful social change.
What We Do:
• Teach what we’ve learned to anyone who wants to create dramatic social change - to organizations, to consultants, to funders, to social entrepreneurs
• Provide support for those learning more effective ways of creating social change work - books and articles and coaching and tons of free online materials
• Engage a new dialogue in the sector, focusing on creating the world we DO want (vs. just trying to fix what we DON’T want). Hosting the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s first-ever podcast series interviewing global change leaders. Hosting Twitter and LinkedIn discussions. Speaking at & attending gatherings - wherever people are talking about “What creates social change?”
• Convening community groups to create rapid, leapfrog, dramatic community change
• Using our own organization as an ongoing case study in how organizations can BE the open transparent change they want to see in the world (example here)
No more slow, steady, baby steps. At Creating the Future, our work is making visionary community change practical and doable, right now.

Lastly, a note to Hugh: If you were to create a Cube Grenade for us, it would be our most cherished possession. As we change our name to reflect the work we are really doing - Creating the Future - we can think of nothing that would fit us more than a kick-ass Cube Grenade that boldly shows the boldness of our work.
Thanks for the opportunity, Hugh!
