The Day I Learned to Ignore Everybody

I worked at a book store over the last Christmas season, and wanting to start a freelance design business, decided that I should probably read a business book or two.

Scouring the racks, I only found one that grabbed my attention ‘Ignore Everybody’. This is a statement that I’ve been practicing for a number of years, but thought wouldn’t be the best plan of attack when starting a business.

After reading it, two or three times, I decided that the title was right. I thus began ignoring everybody, while still staying open minded to their opinions. When being as close as one is to the subject when starting a business, its good to have a sounding board or two that you trust to help you not get to wrapped up in something that the blinders prevent you from missing the bigger picture.

I’d love to get a cube grenade for the same reason I would love to commission a portrait by Mark Ryden; there are certain things you read, see and hear that rock you to your core. ‘Ignore Everybody’ did that for me.

It changed the way I looked at, thought about, and decided to tackle my business. Though it hasn’t launched entirely yet, it will, and when it does, it will be all about the love I have for design.

I’d love to make a living at it, but I won’t be quitting my day job anytime soon. A ‘Cube Grenade’ would be a constant affirmation that I’m dong things my way and that it’s better to be passionate about something and let success happen, if it’s going to, then to worry about trends, or chasing the dollar.

Hugh, consider this a submission and a thank you for changing the way I approach this next phase of my life.

Keep on rockin!
